In a mid-afternoon game the Beverly players took the ice fired up and determined to end their losing streak. The starting line of Chad Marescalchi, Ross Wahl and Domenick Guardino immediately took control of the game and carried the play to Greater Lowell’s goalie Liam Goultte peppering him with shots that resulted in 3 Panther goals in less than two minutes. Drew Cioffi put Beverly on the board first at the ten minute mark of the first period followed quickly by Marescalchi and Anthony D’Amato. The defense of Skyler Crean, Marc Burns, Drew Cioffi and Jonathan Graham fiercely protected Panther’s goalie Yegor Bublik. It wasn’t until late in the period that Lowell’s Reed Bourgeois managed to pot two but the period ended with Beverly’s Wahl scoring with seconds on the clock to put Beverly up 4-2. In the second period the Panther’s came out flying once again, pouncing on the loose pucks and caging Lowell in their own zone. It was all Beverly in the period as they scored 5 times to take an insurmountable lead. Wahl scored twice to kick of the period completing a hat trick in less than five minutes of playing time. The remaining scores came from Drew Cioffi, Sam Cioffi and Guardino while the Panther defenders and goaltender shut out the Lowell offense. In the third the battle was fought mainly at center ice with both teams trying to control the puck. Greater Lowell managed to penetrate the wall around Bublik and score two goals midway through the period, but that would be all they could muster against the superior play of the Panthers. Beverly’s Domenick Guardino scored his second of the game on a great individual effort by outracing the Lowell defenders to a loose puck, cutting in front of the goal and beating Goultte low. Final score Beverly 10, Greater Lowell 4. 10/26/08 The Beverly Squirt 1 team faced off against Melrose very early on a beautiful Sunday morning. It was the 2nd meeting of the two teams with Melrose going home the victor after the first tilt. The Panther offense led by Captain Ross Wahl jumped on the Melrose defense early and carried the play. Wahl, Anthony D’Amato and Chad Marescalchi had numerous opportunities, but couldn’t bury the puck. Meanwhile Melrose was having difficulty penetrating the Panther’s zone due to the defensive efforts of Drew Cioffi, Jonathan Graham and Marc Burns. Neither side was able to capitalize on any opportunities in the first period and it ended in a scoreless draw. The middle period was another battle between the blue lines with neither side being able to mount much of an attack. Tyler Hughey, Tim Casagrande and Sam Cioffi had several chances to put Beverly up, but couldn’t convert. It wasn’t until late in the period that first blood was drawn on a nice end to end rush by Drew Cioffi to give Beverly a 1-0 lead. The lead was short lived however, and was answered within a minute by Melrose’s Connor Crovo. As the clock was winding down Cioffi again grabbed the puck in the Panther’s zone, weaved in and out of all five Melrose players and scored his second of 4 goals to end the period with Beverly up 2-1. In the final period Melrose came out flying and peppered Panther goalie Kevin Morency with shots finally putting one by him to even the score at 2-2. A few minutes later it was Cioffi again making another of his one man rushes from goal line to goal line and putting Beverly back on top 3-2. Unfortunately once again Melrose quickly struck back to knot the score at 3. Keeping his team in the game and once again taking care of business, Cioffi scored his 4th goal of the game with five minutes to play. On a good note the Squirt 2 team was the first to submit a game recap this year. For that honor they win a lifetime supply of Pingree Zamboni ice shavings that are perfect for that favorite flavor sno-cone.
